Lianyungang, March 31 (China News Service) (Reporter Gu Hua) — On March 30, accompanied by a loud whistle, the nation’s first 3,000-kilowatt all-electric locomotive with integrated charging and battery-swapping capabilities slowly entered the Lianyungang Port railway marshaling yard, officially entering service.

In 2025, Lianyungang Port Holding Group partnered with CRRC Datong Electric Locomotive Co., Ltd. to conduct in-depth preliminary research, design planning, technical exchanges, and construction acceptance work focused on new energy locomotives for port railways. After more than a year of collaborative efforts, this all-electric locomotive—which represents the industry’s leading technology—was finally put into service at Lianyungang Port.

Designed to meet the practical needs of shunting operations at Lianyungang Port, this locomotive deeply integrates green principles with smart technology. In terms of power and range, the locomotive is equipped with a 3,360 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery pack, delivering a traction power of 3,000 kilowatts and a combined range of 100 kilometers. It supports both high-power fast charging and battery swapping modes, allowing for flexible energy replenishment based on operational rhythms. Off-peak charging effectively reduces electricity costs, achieving “fast charging, long range, and affordable operation.”

Fu Yongjun, Chairman of CRRC Datong Electric Locomotive Co., Ltd., explained that the 3,000-kilowatt high-power locomotive with integrated charging and battery-swapping capabilities delivered this time is currently the highest-power all-electric locomotive in China. Its successful entry into service represents a powerful collaboration between rail transit equipment manufacturers and port operators, and further demonstrates the deep integration of green technology with the real economy.

In terms of intelligent management, the locomotive connects to a cloud platform via a digital system, allowing ground personnel to remotely monitor operating parameters and battery status in real time, as well as receive fault alerts, thereby significantly enhancing operational and maintenance efficiency and safety. Combined with an intelligent analysis system, the locomotive can accurately identify hazardous conditions such as driver fatigue or distraction, building a “smart defense line” for safe production. According to estimates, this locomotive model reduces annual energy consumption costs by 84% and maintenance costs by 65%, while cutting annual carbon emissions by more than 600 metric tons. Over its entire lifecycle, it is projected to save more than 60 million yuan, achieving a “win-win” outcome in both economic and environmental benefits.

“The successful deployment of this locomotive marks a crucial step for Lianyungang Port in driving the transformation of port railway equipment toward green, low-carbon, intelligent, and efficient operations,” ” Su Jian, Deputy Manager of the Railway Transportation Branch of Lianyungang Port Group, explained that it not only achieves “zero emissions” throughout the entire port shunting process but also represents new breakthroughs in intelligent operation and maintenance as well as safety risk management.

Hu Yongtao, Chief Engineer of Lianyungang Port Holding Group, stated that the successful implementation of this new energy locomotive project—a joint effort between Lianyungang Port and CRRC Datong Electric Locomotive Co., Ltd.—provides a cleaner and more reliable green solution for port rail operations. Both parties will further deepen their cooperation to promote the green upgrade of port railway equipment and jointly establish a model of railway-port collaboration and a benchmark for technological innovation. This will contribute significantly to the Group’s efforts to create exemplary models, integrate into the development of the Yangtze River Delta, fully leverage the potential of the Longhai Line, and enhance the port’s status as a transportation hub.
